Training for the Derby

When I found out I had made the cut to ride in the Derby, I found a gym close to my apartment here in Delhi and began taking kickboxing classes again! Woo! Back in the day when I was 18 or so and living in Oklahoma I took kickboxing and mixed martial arts classes on a regular basis. Now here I am 24 years old living in a city where not only is women’s safety a big issue (and not just because the indian men out number the indian women) but just riding on a regular basis is not enough to get me fit for the derby. My trainer doesnt speak much English but made it clear that he was impressed with my talents as a fighter and has somehow taken it upon himself to make me the next women’s fighting champion…or something like that. So even though my legs are sore, my back is sore, my abs are sore and I’m pretty sure I could use a good chiropractor…I’m off to my class! All the while when I think of my intense training program for the next eight months and the Mongol Derby awaiting my future all I can do is tell myself, “what doesn’t kill you, can only make you stronger…” (Let’s pray it doesn’t kill me!!!)
